Year 5

Welcome to Year 5!

We would like to take this opportunity to say hello and extend a warm welcome to the children and parents joining us in Year 5 this year. We have lots of exciting things planned and hope your children will share these experiences with you on a regular basis.

Year 5 is a hugely important year in your school life. Being in Upper key Stage Two, the children have a responsibility to be role models to the younger pupils. They will experience new opportunities and challenges throughout the year, both inside and outside of the classroom. These will help them to develop and evolve both as learners and as the young adults they are transforming in to.

What are Year 5 learning?

English

In English we looked at playscripts in which the children wrote their own scripts based on “The Three Little Pigs” going to trial.

This term we are writing News Reports.

Maths

In Maths, we've been studying Fractions and just started learning how to change fractions into decimals. Next, we're going to learn about percentages and how they relate to Fractions and Decimals.

Later this term, we will also explore Perimeter and Area.

Science

In our previous Science lessons, Year 5 students looked at how living things grow and change, studying everything from tiny seeds turning into plants, to how animals and people grow up. They learned about the different steps in growing up for plants, animals, and humans, and talked about why each step is important. These lessons helped them see how all living things are connected and why we should take care of our environment.

Over the next two terms in Science, Year 5 students are set for an amazing adventure into Earth and Space! They'll get to dive into fun activities and explore everything from the stars and planets in our solar system to how the Earth spins, creating day and night. They'll learn about the moon, how it changes shape in the sky, and why we have different seasons. Plus, they'll discover the power of gravity and the exciting world of astronauts and space missions.

RE

In Religious Education, we recently concluded studying "Sacramental People," where the children explored various Sacraments. We've transitioned into the Lenten season, focusing on the theme "From Lent to Easter." This topic guides us through a reflective journey of prayer, fasting, and charity. We're examining the significant events leading to Easter and considering the impact of Jesus' sacrifices on our daily behaviour and choices. The children have also made personal Lenten promises.

Year 5 students have been actively participating in the daily mile at least once a week, engaging in fundraising activities for CAFOD as a part of their commitment to almsgiving during Lent. Additionally, those students who have celebrated their First Holy Communion have participated in reconciliation, further deepening their engagement with this reflective season.

Topic

In our previous topic, Year 5 students embarked on a vivid journey through “The Rainforest”, delving into its lush layers and discovering the incredible diversity of life it sustains. They explored the four main layers of the rainforest - the emergent, canopy, understory, and forest floor - understanding how each layer supports unique plant and animal species. Students were fascinated by the adaptations that enable these species to thrive in their specific environments, from the brightly coloured feathers of birds in the canopy to the camouflaged insects on the forest floor. Through interactive activities, they learned about the significance of rainforests in regulating global climates and providing essential resources. The unit also highlighted the threats facing rainforests, including deforestation, and discussed the importance of conservation efforts. This immersive exploration not only broadened their knowledge of biodiversity but also fostered a deep appreciation for the complexity and importance of rainforests in our world.

We will be studying Renewable Energy in Spring B

Computing

In Computing we have been learning about variables and strings.

Homework

Homework plays a crucial role in reinforcing and solidifying children's learning. Assignments are distributed weekly through Google Classroom. Some students may receive supplementary maths and reading activities tailored to support their individual learning needs. This extra support aims to enhance their understanding and proficiency in these key subjects.
