What are Reception learning

English

The children have been reading the story Naughty bus by Jan and Jerry Oke.  They have been writing their drivers licence and sentences about the bus.  Next week, in World book day, they will write a book on buses and become authors. Their performance in the Poetry assembly was wonderful, they were so confident saying "I like myself" by Karen Beaumont.

Maths

The learning has been focussed on Odd and even numbers and the children have learned rhymes and songs to help them remember which numbers and odd and even.  They have been measuring themselves and using the words tall, taller, short and shorter. The children are working hard to recognise, write and quantify the numbers 6, 7, 8 and 9.

RE

Our topic is Lent to Easter, which has begun with learning about how Christians do three special actions during Lent: Fasting, Almsgiving and praying.  The children wrote Lenten Promises to be helpful and kind at home and school. We are looking forward to taking part in the sponsored walk next week.

Understanding the world

In Autumn, the children planted daffodil bulbs and are delighted to see they have grown beautifully and are blooming for all to enjoy. They have touched and learnt about technology from the past and noticed how big telephones use to be!

Computing

The children are exploring 2Explore music in Mini Mash. They enjoyed the various instruments, and they created a sad-based song and a happy-based song for their RE topic Lent.

Here are 2 songs based on Lent.

Art

The children have been creating their own paper daffodils and even adding green stems. They are decorating our classes and your homes as well. They are becoming very skilled at painting red London buses.

P.E

Gymnastics lessons have been very exciting for the children. They have been learning how to travel creatively and safely using benches, gym tables, mats and climbing frames. They have been building up their upper body strength and performing forward rolls.

Phonics

At St Edmund’s we use ‘Little Wandle’ to teach phonics, common exception words and to support early reading development.

In Reception your child will be taught phonics every day.

Alongside the teaching of phonics, every child will be provided with daily opportunities to apply their phonic knowledge and skills in reading and spelling.

Homework

Homework is put onto ‘Google Classrooms’ on Thursday and is to be handed in on Monday.  There will be an English and Maths Homework set weekly.

There will also be weekly phonics and words to learn. Your child is only expected to read the weekly words not write them. When your child is completing their reading, we will also ask your child to read the words and know their phonics.

Once a half-term your child will also be set an R.E. homework and a reading comprehension homework.

From time to time we will send home name writing sheets so that your child can practise writing their name. We use pre cursive letter formation in Reception which may mean that your child will need to practise more often if they have learnt to write their name in a different style.

Use the homework book provided if your child is asked to write for their homework but do not send it into school.

Children will have individual logins for the Active Learn website and Numbots website. Active learn has phonics games and online books to support your child with their reading. Each week a new book will be added to their account. There are pointer and support for parents inside the front and back cover to help you in supporting your child with their reading. Numbots is an interactive online website to support children to develop understanding, recall and fluency in mental addition and subtraction, so that they move from counting to calculating.

P.E.

Reception’s PE day is Thursday morning and Tuesday morning. Please send your child into school wearing their PE Kits not their school uniforms on Tuesdays.

Earrings- Your child is not allowed to wear earrings on Tuesdays. These should be removed before your child comes to school. We are not allowed to remove earrings.

Wow Moments

We know that school is not the only place that your child will be making progress and learning new things. We would love to hear about these ‘WOW ‘ moments. Feel free to write down these new achievements on a ‘wow card’ and send them in with your child. E.G “Thomas wrote his name independently”, “Thomas ate all of his vegetables”, “Thomas recognised the bus number 78”. We will share your child’s achievements with their class and display on our wall.

All About Me Book

Please share your child’s experiences outside of school by writing a short entry into this book. You may visit the cinema, a party, a museum or go for a nature walk. You could stick in cinema receipt, a map from the museum, a party invitation or leaves/flowers collected from your walk. The children love this opportunity to talk about their experiences, and it is a great opportunity for them to develop their confidence and speaking and listening skills in front of a group. Children really love to share photographs of the experiences too! If you are unable to print your pictures out, please load them onto 'Stream' in the Google Classroom.
