Year 5

Welcome to Year 5!

We would like to take this opportunity to say hello and extend a warm welcome to the children and parents joining us in Year 5 this year. We have lots of exciting things planned and hope your children will share these experiences with you on a regular basis.

Year 5 is a hugely important year in your school life. Being in Upper key Stage Two, the children have a responsibility to be role models to the younger pupils. They will experience new opportunities and challenges throughout the year, both inside and outside of the classroom. These will help them to develop and evolve both as learners and as the young adults they are transforming in to.

What are Year 5 learning?

English

This term in Year 5, our English learning was inspired by the powerful novel Holes by Louis Sachar. We explored key themes such as justice, fate, friendship and perseverance, encouraging pupils to think deeply about characters’ choices and consequences. The children produced some truly amazing pieces of writing, including reflective diary entries, informative non-chronological reports and vivid descriptive writing that brought Camp Green Lake from Texas to Edmonton. We ended our unit in the best way possible- with a movie night! Watching Holes together with popcorn in hand, the classroom was filled with fascinated faces as pupils compared the film to the book and celebrated their hard work. Next, we immersed ourselves in The Boy in the Tower by Polly Ho-Yen. The story follows a boy called Ade as his world begins to fall apart in the depths of Camberwell. To deepen our understanding and empathy, we planned a Year 5 sleepover, allowing the children to experience elements of the story in a truly memorable way. Year 5 brought the book to life through thoughtful discussions, creative responses and teamwork. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that the children will remember for years to come - proving that reading can be powerful, immersive and unforgettable.

Maths

In Year 5 Maths this term, pupils have been consolidating and extending their learning across a range of key topics. We have revisited and deepened understanding of place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, and fractions, ensuring children develop both accuracy and confidence in their calculation in both Arithmetic and Reasoning questions. The children are becoming budding mathematicians, confidently explaining their thinking and mastering increasingly complex concepts.

RE

In Year 5 RE, pupils explored the theme of Creation and Covenant, engaging deeply with key stories from the Bible and their significance within salvation history. We focused on the Exodus story, learning how God reveals Himself to Moses as Yahweh through the burning bush. This led to rich discussions about God’s character and relationship with His people. The children produced beautiful artwork and thoughtful theological questions, particularly around challenging ideas such as why “bad things” happen in the world, including the Israelites’ 400 years in slavery. Through guided discussion and reflection, pupils developed a growing understanding of the sovereignty and omnipotence of God, using examples from the Exodus to support their thinking. We also explored different examples of covenants throughout salvation history, helping pupils see how God’s promises unfold over time. Learning continued with a focus on prophecy and promise through the humble story of King David. The children learned that God often chooses the underdog and values servant leadership, ultimately discovering how Jesus comes from David’s lineage, explored through the Jesse Tree. The children have also learnt the symbolism of Psalm 23, whilst also memorising it as a memory verse! Year 5 showed maturity, curiosity and deep reflection throughout this unit, engaging thoughtfully with complex theological ideas and expressing their learning with creativity and insight.

Geography

Year 5 have been exploring the big question “Why is California so thirsty?” During the unit the children have shown fantastic curiosity and enthusiasm. Pupils learnt about California’s climate, droughts and water shortages, investigating how aqueducts, reservoirs and water management systems are used to supply millions of people. Alongside this, they explored the world’s oceans, focusing on the effects of climate change, such as the rising sea levels, melting ice caps and plastic pollution. The children were highly engaged and produced some amazing displays, clearly explaining the challenges facing California and the oceans, while showing a strong understanding of how human actions impact our planet!

ICT

Year 5 learnt how many types of variables there are in computer programming and created a string of code to make random adjective words on Purple Mash.

Student Council

Our Student Council is made up of one Councillor representative from each class, from Year 1 through to Year 6. The council is led by two Co-Captains, who oversee meetings, support Councillors and help guide discussions and decision-making. The Student Council works on a four-week cycle, developing vital leadership skills along the way. Each cycle focusses on:

● Communication skills, helping councillors share ideas clearly and confidently

● Diplomacy, as pupils learn to listen to different viewpoints and reach collective decisions

● Gathering feedback, where councillors collect ideas and opinions from their classes and bring them to meetings for discussion

● Meeting preparation, with delegated topics, roles and persuasive approaches

● Meetings with the Headteacher, giving pupils a genuine voice in school development The Student Council is currently planning and organising a range of innovative events and ideas aimed at taking our school to the next level. There are lots of exciting plans in the pipeline, so watch this space for upcoming discos, quiz nights, and new resources and equipment for our school community!

LCS News

LCS News Magazine is back — and better than ever! With new faces, fresh ideas and endless creativity, this exciting publication is truly made by the children, for the children. Our young journalists have been busy surveying the school, sharing the top ten things you love, celebrating a Teacher of the Month, and filling the pages with colouring activities, artwork, interviews and so much more. Every page reflects the voices, opinions and imagination of our pupils, giving them a platform to express themselves and connect with one another. LCS News is more than a magazine, it’s a celebration of student voice, creativity and community spirit. We are incredibly proud of the passion and teamwork behind every edition.

Echoes of Our Past

As an extension of Black History Month, we wanted to ensure that Black history does not remain confined to just one month – but instead lives on throughout the year. Echoes of Our Past is a heartfelt celebration of Black history, told through the voices of our children. Through reflection, creativity and discussion, pupils explored stories of resilience, courage and achievement, ensuring that the legacy of the past continues to shape our present and future. This project allowed children to honour history with empathy and understanding, recognising the importance of remembering, learning and celebrating diverse voices. These echoes remind us that history is not something we simply study – it is something we carry forward together. We invite you to join us as we celebrate Black history through the powerful and thoughtful voices of our children.
