Climate Action Plan
Welcome to the Climate Action Plan for St. Edmund's Primary School, a dedicated initiative empowering our pupils to lead the charge toward a sustainable future. At the heart of our plan are our newly appointed Climate Ambassadors, a group of passionate children chosen to champion environmental stewardship. These young leaders are on a mission to promote sustainability, drive eco-friendly projects, and create widespread awareness of climate change both within our school and throughout the wider local community. By inspiring collective action and teaching lasting environmental habits, our ambassadors are ensuring that St. Edmund's steps forward as a beacon of green change.
What is a Climate Action Plan for Schools?
A climate action plan for schools is a practical, structured roadmap that outlines how an educational setting will reduce its environmental impact, adapt to climate risks, and teach students about sustainability. In the UK, the Department for Education (DfE) expects all schools and education settings to nominate a sustainability lead and put a climate action plan in place.
The Four Key Pillars
Every school climate action plan is built around four core areas:
- Decarbonisation and Net Zero: Steps to measure, manage, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions (such as cutting energy use or switching to renewable power).
- Adaptation and Resilience: Preparing buildings and operations for extreme weather, like extreme heat or heavy flooding.
- Biodiversity and Nature: Protecting and improving local wildlife habitats, green spaces, and school grounds.
- Climate Education and Green Skills: Integrating sustainability, environmental science, and green career paths into lessons and school culture.
Why Schools Need a Plan
- Cuts Costs: Energy-efficient upgrades and reduced waste lower utility bills.
- Builds Student Agency: Involving pupils in eco-projects gives them practical skills and eases climate anxiety.
- Meets National Targets: It supports the UK’s broader goal of reaching net-zero emissions and improving public resource stewardship.
- Tailored Approach: There is no rigid government template; schools can create flexible, evolving documents that fit their specific size, budget, and local community.
