Year 5
Welcome to Year 5!
We would like to take this opportunity to say hello and extend a warm welcome to the children and parents joining us in Year 5 this year. We have lots of exciting things planned and hope your children will share these experiences with you on a regular basis.
Year 5 is a hugely important year in your school life. Being in Upper key Stage Two, the children have a responsibility to be role models to the younger pupils. They will experience new opportunities and challenges throughout the year, both inside and outside of the classroom. These will help them to develop and evolve both as learners and as the young adults they are transforming in to.

What are Year 5 learning?
Overall:
This term in Year 5, we have also been completing fantastic work across the curriculum. In maths, we focused on statistics as well as perimeter and area, with the children using their times tables to draw and calculate different shapes. In English and science, our learning was linked through the Hidden Figures topic, where we explored space, created wonderful projects, and took part in outdoor environmental planting activities. We also enjoyed a special Mother’s Day “Wow Day,” and celebrated World Book Day with creative activities such as drawing with chalk outside. In geography, we began learning about North and South America, creating engaging presentations, while in history we explored Norse culture and delved into the fascinating world of the Vikings.
RE:
In RE, we have been exploring the season of Lent, developing a deeper understanding of sacrifice and its importance in our faith. We reflected on Jesus’ time in the desert for 40 days, discussing themes of temptation and conscience, and what these mean in our own lives. We also spent time learning about and reflecting upon the Stations of the Cross, helping the children to thoughtfully consider each stage of Jesus’ journey. Some children also had the opportunity to visit church as part of their learning on reconciliation. It has been a reflective and meaningful topic, deepening both their knowledge and personal understanding.
Maths:
In maths, we have been focusing on perimeter, area, and statistics. The children have been highly engaged, showing great focus and working hard throughout. They explored their learning using whiteboard pens on their tables, helping them to visualise and better understand area and perimeter in a practical and meaningful context.
English:
In English, we have been immersing ourselves in the inspiring story of Hidden Figures, linking our learning to space while bravely exploring powerful themes such as racism, segregation and gender discrimination. The children have shown incredible passion and curiosity, fully engaging in discussions and producing thoughtful, high-quality work they are truly proud of. Our World Book Day celebrations were just as exciting. Year 5.2 became authors, creating their own imaginative books, while Year 5.1 brought their learning to life outdoors by drawing their own creative interpretations of the “Bluchers” explored in previous texts. It has been wonderful to see such enthusiasm and creativity flourish!
Science:
In science, we have been diving deep into the fascinating realm of space, exploring planets, the solar system, and the relationship between the Earth and the Sun. The children thoroughly enjoyed getting hands-on by creating their own planets using clay, bringing their learning to life in a creative and memorable way. They have shown great curiosity and enthusiasm, developing a deeper understanding of how the Earth moves in relation to the Sun and what makes our universe so extraordinary.
Geography:
In geography, we have been exploring North and South America, with a particular focus on cities and the concept of megacities. The children have worked incredibly hard to research and present their findings, creating wonderful and engaging presentations that showcase their growing knowledge and confidence. We are also very excited to continue this learning next term, where we will celebrate with a special “Wow Day” linked to this topic.
History:
In history, we have been exploring Norse culture through rich and engaging learning about the Vikings. The children thoroughly enjoyed reading and discussing fascinating stories, including those of Erik the Red and Freydis, which have brought this period of history to life. Their enthusiasm and curiosity have shone through as they deepened their understanding of Viking life, beliefs, and adventures.
ICT

Year 5 made their own 3D maze games in Purple Mash. This was an enjoyable lesson, and they learnt how to create hotspots, adding lives and collectables, levels all in 5 weeks. Well done.
