Music

‘Music gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything’ – Plato.

At St Edmund's, we value the importance of Music and how much it can benefit our children. Music ignites all areas of a child’s development: it improves academic skills, it cultivates social skills, it refines discipline and patience, it boosts self-esteem and it introduces children to other cultures. With this in mind, we keep Music at the heart of everything we do.

The children have a Music lesson every week, where they learn to listen and appraise music, they sing, they dance, they play different instruments and they learn about composers. In Year 3, all children learn to play an instrument in their weekly music lesson. They are then encouraged to continue playing this instrument. Individual music lessons are also a part of our children’s learning, if parents wish for their children to learn an instrument. This is provided through Enfield Music Service (EMS).

At St Edmund's we love to sing together. The children sing at assemblies every week and during whole school Masses. Each term, every class learns a new song, which they then perform to the whole school in our big end of term celebratory Music assemblies. These assemblies are a highlight in the children’s school year. Children in KS1 are also selected every year to take part in the KS1 Spring Partnership Festival and the same in KS2 for the KS2 Summer Partnership Festival. Here the children learn a collection of songs that have been provided by EMS and they perform them with other Enfield schools. Our St Edmund’s School Choir is very active in school life. The Choir rehearse every week and perform during Liturgies and assemblies. We are very proud of our Choir and they have qualified for the Mayor’s Choral Award for the last few years.
